Epilepsy is a common brain disease, with an estimate prevalence
of 1-2% in the society. Almost 35% of epileptic
patients suffer from treatment resistance, and they need specialized
examinations, which is one of the brain monitoring tasks for surgery. Also
there are another type of patients with suspicious convulsive movements, there
is a possibility of psychogenic seizures for them, and brain monitoring for definite diagnosis is needed.
Considering that,
the high percentage of patients have drug-resistant epilepsy and more probably complications
occurred for these patients. Therefore, special attention and careful
examination in order to control convulsions is considered as essential and
vital for them. Accordingly, these patients have drug-resistant treatment, and the
other treatment methods are required for them in order to control convulsions.
The long-term
video-EEG monitoring (LTM) is using worldwide currently, as an important
diagnostic tool for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. LTM, or long-term
monitoring with video and EEG, is a method to provide the location of the epileptic
focus in patients by recording the EEG for several days along with the video
seizure attacks recording. Epilepsy could be controlled effectively due to
determining the epileptic focus in patient also the surgery of lesion cussing
seizures. Almost, epilepsy surgery leads to the complete recovery of patients,
discontinuation of anti-epileptic drug treatment, therefore reducing the side
effects of long-term medicines using, the risk of repeating seizures attacking and
finally improving the quality of patient's life in many cases.
According to
the lack of LTM facilities in Kermanshah, patients with drug-resistant epilepsy
inevitably went to other cities such as Tehran and Isfahan to undergo LTM after
passing long waiting time and suffering many hardships, despite the possibility
of epilepsy surgery in Iran, In recent years. For the first time, the Farabi
Hospital in Kermanshah and neighboring provinces, has established an Epilepsy
Monitoring Unit in order to perform LTM, in 2018. So that the patients with
epilepsy and their families benefit from the world latest diagnostic and
treatment facilities, and their pains and hardships reduce.
Epilepsy Monitoring Unit- Kermanshah Farabi Hospital
patients under
the supervision of a neurologist (epilepsy fellowship), experienced and trained
nursing staff are hospitalized for several days in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
of Farabi Hospital. Permanent brain scans and recording of seizure attacks are
performed for them during this period, finally, the patients are discharged from
the hospital with drug treatment. The medical team determines the center of the
seizure with examining the findings of the patients during hospitalization, and
then a decision will be made regarding the epilepsy surgery of the patients in
the presence of the patient and her/his family.
We hoped, a
services could be provided for patients with epilepsy and their families by
providing the necessary facilities with the latest diagnostic and treatment
methods for epilepsy.
